When did opening doors for ladies become optional?

Took my wife and daughters out to dinner last night. Watched a young guy walk through a door ahead of his girlfriend without even holding it. Made me think about how much this simple act has fallen away. It takes literally two seconds and shows respect. Started having conversations with my boys about this being non negotiable, regardless of what they see other people doing. A man leads with courtesy.
