When did we stop holding doors for people?

Was at the grocery store yesterday and watched a young dad just let the door swing in the face of an elderly woman behind him. I held it open and she thanked me like I did something extraordinary. When did basic courtesy become so rare? I make sure my kids see me holding doors for women and older folks. It's not about being weak, it's about having character. My grandfather would be ashamed at what I see sometimes.

I notice it constantly now. Saw the exact same thing last week at Target. It's a small thing but it really does say something about how rushed everyone is these days. I try to make a point of holding doors for people when I can.

To be fair, that young dad probably had a toddler meltdown in progress and his brain was scrambled eggs. But yeah, basic courtesy shouldn't disappear just because you're a parent.

Yeah this bugs me too. I always hold the door and my kids see it. Small stuff matters.

I try to teach my boys this stuff even though I mess up sometimes. It's about respect though, not just being nice.

Man, this drives me crazy too. I'm teaching my kids to hold doors for people and half the time they look confused when someone lets theirs slam. We're definitely losing something here.

To be fair, I've been that distracted dad rushing through a store with a toddler meltdown happening. Not making excuses, but sometimes we're just barely holding it together. That said, you're right - we should all do better.
