When should a man stop making excuses?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. At what point do we have to accept full responsibility for where we are instead of blaming circumstances or bad luck? My own father always said a man owns his mistakes and works to fix them rather than explaining them away. That lesson has shaped everything in my life from work to marriage to how I raise my kids. How did your father or grandfather handle this?

This hits different as a parent. You can't blame circumstances when your kids are watching how you handle adversity. That's when the excuses have to stop.
