My doc suggested I try SSRIs for anxiety and I'm hesitant. I keep thinking I should be able to handle this on my own, like it means I'm failing somehow? But then I realize that's dumb—I'd take insulin if I needed it. Anyone here on meds? How long did it take to notice a difference? Any side effects that were annoying?
Your kids need their dad healthy and present more than they need him to tough it out alone. That's the perspective that changed it for me. Anxiety medication isn't failure, it's self care.
The idea that you should be able to handle it on your own is exactly the kind of thinking that keeps a lot of us struggling. Your brain chemistry isn't a personal failing. If your doc thinks it would help, that's worth a real conversation, not just dismissing it.
Started on them last year and I'm not gonna lie, the first week was weird. But after that it was like someone turned down the volume on everything. I could actually think. I'm a better dad and husband now. Talk to your doc about side effects though, that's important.
I get the hesitation but anxiety is legitimately exhausting. It's not about being weak or needing a crutch. It's about giving yourself a fighting chance to enjoy your life and be present for your kids without that constant weight. Give it a shot if your doc recommends it.

SSRIs aren't a sign of weakness, they're a tool. Anxiety doesn't care if you're tough or not. I was the same way, thought I should just power through it. Started them three years ago and wish I hadn't waited so long. My only regret is not doing it sooner.
