Self-care as a dad feels selfish but my therapist says otherwise

I started taking 30 minutes every other morning to go to the gym before anyone wakes up. I was feeling guilty about it like I should be doing family stuff instead. My therapist pointed out that I can't pour from an empty cup and if I'm burnt out I'm not showing up as the dad I want to be. She's right. Now I'm actually more patient and present when I am with my family. Taking care of yourself isn't selfish, it's necessary.

Those 30 minutes are an investment in being present with your family the rest of the day. I've learned that taking care of yourself isn't something you do instead of being a good parent, it's how you become one.
