Taking anxiety meds for the first time

Started an SSRI last week per my doctor's recommendation and I'm nervous about it. Worried about side effects and whether I actually need it or if I can just tough it out. But honestly my anxiety has been pretty bad lately, affecting my sleep and making it hard to be present with the kids. Part of me is hopeful this helps and part of me feels like I'm failing by needing medication. Anyone been through this?
