Baby won't sleep unless being held, am I screwing this up?

My son is 3 weeks old and literally will not sleep in the bassinet. The second I put him down he cries. I've been holding him for like 6 hours today. My wife says this is normal but I feel like we're doing something wrong. Should we be sleep training already? Also my arms are dead. Any tips?

You're not screwing up at all, this is totally normal at three weeks. My arms have been tired for two years now but honestly those early days holding him were some of my favorite.
