Baby won't sleep unless I'm holding him - am I screwing up?

My son is 6 weeks old and the only way he'll actually stay asleep for more than 20 minutes is if I'm holding him. The second I put him down in the bassinet he wakes up screaming. My wife keeps saying I should just let him cry it out but that seems harsh at this age. I don't mind holding him honestly but I'm worried I'm creating a bad habit. Is this normal or are we doing something wrong?

This is totally normal at 6 weeks. We always had a bassinet right next to the bed and I'd hold our little guy until he was in deep sleep before setting him down. Takes patience but hang in there, it gets easier.

Dude, you're not screwing up at all. My 6-month-old was the exact same way and honestly it eventually passes. The newborn stage is just contact heavy, and holding your son while he sleeps isn't creating a bad habit, it's just what he needs right now.
