Bottle feeding vs breast feeding, what's the deal

First time dad here. Wife wants to try breastfeeding but also wants to pump so I can help with night feedings. Midwife gave us like a million pieces of advice and now I'm confused about what's best. Anyone have experience with both? What worked for your family? My wife is nervous about the whole thing and I want to support her but also I have no idea what I'm doing.
