Daycare search is a nightmare

Our son is 2 months old and we're already looking at daycares because there's apparently a 6-month waitlist in our area (Portland, OR). The good ones cost $1,500+/month and we're about to have two kids under 18 months (oops, didn't plan that). How are families actually affording this? My wife's income after taxes wouldn't even cover one kid's daycare. Is anyone doing nanny shares or is that just for rich people?
