First night home and I'm terrified I'm going to break something

We just got home from the hospital 3 hours ago and my son is in his bassinet next to our bed. Every time he makes a noise I jolt awake thinking something is wrong. His head is so soft I'm barely touching him when I burp him. Is this normal or am I being crazy? My wife is sleeping but I can't stop watching him breathe.

Two kids under five here and I'll be honest, the fear never totally goes away but it gets manageable fast. By night three you'll be passing out between feedings. You got this and your son is lucky to have a dad this concerned.

The fact that you're worried about this tells me you're not going to break anything. Kids are resilient little humans. Get some rest when he rests and try to dial back the vigilance just a notch or two.

Dude, that first night adrenaline is real. I was the same way with my first, jumping at every grunt and sigh. Here's the thing though - babies are way tougher than they seem, and your instinct to be careful means you're already doing great.
