We got home yesterday afternoon and I haven't slept in like 30 hours. Every time we try to put our newborn down in the bassinet he screams. The moment we pick him up he settles right down. My wife and I are taking shifts but I'm exhausted and honestly a little scared. Is this normal? How long does this phase last? When can we expect him to be ok laying down?
Hang in there, friend. My grandson went through the exact same thing. Newborns just want to be close to you, it's not forever. Those 30 hours are rough but you're gonna make it through this.

Those first weeks are absolutely brutal. If your wife is up for it, take shifts so you can actually sleep. One person handles the baby from like 10pm to 2am, the other from 2am to 6am. Game changer when you're that sleep deprived.
The holding phase is rough but it passes faster than you think. Try contact napping yourself. Seriously, just hold the baby and sleep. You're exhausted enough that it'll happen. The 30 hours with no sleep sounds absolutely brutal.

Welcome to newborn life. The holding thing is totally normal and it does get better. In the meantime, try to stay sane. Get family to help with household stuff so you can focus on sleep when the baby is sleeping.
