Is he grunting a lot or just crying? We freaked out our first night too but found out our son just makes noise while he sleeps. Could also be gas. Try holding him upright and gently rubbing his back. And don't be afraid to call your pediatrician if something feels really wrong - they expect these calls at midnight.
