Help! My newborn will only sleep on me

My son is 3 weeks old and will literally only sleep on my chest or my wife's chest. The minute we put him in the bassinet he starts crying. We're getting no sleep because we're both terrified of rolling over on him. Everyone keeps saying he'll sleep in the crib eventually but I'm losing my mind. Is this normal? When did your babies finally agree to sleep in their own space?
