Just got offered a promotion - should I take it?
My company wants me to move into a manager role with a 20% raise. In February when baby was born I would've jumped at it. Now? I'm scared. The role would mean more travel (currently zero), longer hours, and more stress. My wife would be home with our 9-month-old full time. She'd support either way but I can see the anxiety on her face when I bring it up. Is it crazy to turn down career growth for this? I never thought I'd be the guy who prioritized family stuff over ambition but here I am.
Ask about it differently. Don't ask 'would this job have travel' ask them 'what percentage of months involve travel and for how long.' Make them be specific instead of vague. That'll tell you if they're serious about flexibility or just talking.
