My 2 week old won't sleep unless I'm holding him. Am I doing this wrong?

So my son is 2 weeks old and the ONLY way he'll sleep is if I'm holding him. Soon as I try to put him down in the bassinet he wakes up screaming. My wife keeps saying we're creating a bad habit but I'm honestly terrified of putting him down wrong or having something happen. Is this normal? How long does this phase last because my arms are actually dying right now.
