Newborn won't sleep anywhere but on me

Our son is 2 weeks old and the only way he'll actually sleep is if I'm holding him or he's on my chest. The second I put him down in the bassinet he wakes up screaming. My wife is exhausted because she's doing all the feedings and I feel useless just holding a baby all night. Is this normal? When does this phase end? I love having him close but I'm worried we're creating bad habits.
