Scared I'm not bonding with my newborn

Everyone talks about this instant connection but honestly I feel kind of awkward with my daughter. She cries and I don't know what she needs. My wife just seems to know instinctively but I feel like I'm just holding a potato. I know it'll get better once she smiles and responds to me but right now I feel like I'm failing at the most important job. Anybody else feel this way at first?

That's actually more common than you think. The bonding happens slowly for a lot of dads, especially when your wife is handling the early stuff. Give yourself grace here.

Dude, five months in and I'm still scared half the time. The awkward feeling with all the crying totally passes once you figure out her cues. You've got this.
