Son won't sleep unless he's being held - is this normal?

My boy is 6 weeks old and literally will not sleep in his bassinet. The second we put him down his eyes pop open and he starts crying. We've tried the whole warming the sheet, white noise, everything. I'm exhausted and my wife is exhausted. She keeps saying it's a phase but I'm starting to think we broke something. Anyone else dealt with this? When did your kid finally chill out about being put down?
