Wife and I are still debating this for our son due in 6 weeks. I'm leaning yes because that's what I had, wife is leaning no because she read some stuff about it being unnecessary. Haven't found any good resources that aren't super biased one way or the other. What's the actual reasoning people use here?
We went through the same thing. Honestly, I'd suggest talking to your pediatrician about both sides rather than just going with what was done to you. That's what helped us break the tie. We ended up not doing it and have zero regrets, but I have friends who did and they're fine too. Either way, make sure it's a deliberate choice you both feel good about.
Don't let this become a thing that lingers between you two after the baby comes. Whatever you decide, you need to be on the same page. We delayed our decision until after birth and by then we were so sleep deprived we just picked one and moved on. Probably would've been better to settle it beforehand.
My wife wanted it, I didn't. We talked about infection rates, sensitivity, cleaning, all of it. What swayed us was reading actual medical organizations' takes on it. In the end we decided against it. Not trying to push you either way, just saying there's more info out there than just 'that's what my dad did.'

This is such a personal call. We did it with our first and honestly didn't think twice about it. With our second, we asked more questions and still did it, but for different reasons. Just make sure you're making the choice for YOUR family, not just because of what happened to you or your wife's family history.
Talked to three different parents and got three different answers. Read the AAP guidelines if you haven't. They basically say it's a parental choice now rather than a medical necessity. That framing helped us a lot because it took some of the pressure off.
