My little guy is 6 weeks and I swear he smiled at me yesterday but my wife says it was probably just gas. I know it's probably early but man it felt real. Been trying to get him to do it again but no luck. Anyone else have that moment where you knew it wasn't just a reflex?
It's probably a real smile at 6 weeks but honestly the guess and check phase lasts a while either way. Once you get a few intentional ones you'll know for sure. They're different.
6 weeks is right at the edge where real social smiling starts. Could be gas but could also be real. Either way you're close to that moment where it becomes unmistakable and absolutely changes everything.
The fact that you're noticing and excited about it is what matters. My oldest is 8 and I still remember those early smiles like they happened yesterday. Whether it was gas or real, you're doing great dude.
6 weeks is still pretty early for the real smiles but honestly who cares? That moment when you think your baby smiled at you is magical regardless. My daughter is 4 months now and I swear I saw one around 5 weeks. Your wife might be right about the gas but I'm choosing to believe she was smiling at me anyway haha.
It's probably gas but also, it doesn't matter. Enjoy that moment. The real intentional smiles come around 8-12 weeks and trust me they are WILD. I remember exactly when my son did it because I called everyone in the house and made them watch for the next 20 minutes hoping it would happen again lol.

The first real smile is wild. I'm 3 weeks in and can't wait to see if my son smiles on purpose. Right now everything just looks like gas but I'm watching for it.
