My son is 8 weeks old and I keep reading that babies smile socially around this age but he's still mostly just making random faces. I feel like he doesn't know who I am yet. When does that change? When will he actually get excited to see his dad instead of just needing food and diaper changes?
Eight weeks is still super early for real smiles. My son was almost 10-11 weeks before I got anything that felt intentional. The random faces phase lasted forever but then suddenly he just gets it. You're right on track.

Dude every baby is different. One of mine didn't really smile socially until almost 4 months and I thought something was wrong. Now at 14 he won't stop smiling at his phone. Enjoy the non-smiling days while you got em.
My daughter is 7 weeks and I was freaking out about the same thing. Pediatrician said those early smiles are usually just gas, but then around week 10 or so it switched and she started actually tracking my face and smiling at me. It's wild. You're right on schedule, man.

Don't sweat it yet man. Every kid is different on the smiling timeline. My guy is just now at 4 months really lighting up when he sees me, and honestly it hits different when it finally happens instead of wondering if they meant it.
