When did your baby start smiling at you on purpose?

Our son is 6 weeks old and sometimes when I talk to him he gets these little expressions that almost look like smiles but I can't tell if it's real or just gas. My mom keeps saying he's too young to actually smile but then I see videos online of babies smiling at like 5 weeks. At what point did you guys know your baby was actually reacting to you? It's the one thing keeping me sane during the 3am feeding sessions.

The social smile usually hits around 6-8 weeks consistently. It sounds like you might be catching the early ones - that little expression when they're processing your face. It gets way more obvious and frequent pretty soon.

Six weeks is still early but those little social smiles do start around that age. They're not huge gummy grins yet but you'll know it when it happens - it feels like they're actually seeing you and reacting to YOU. Game changer when it kicks in for real.

I spent so much time at 6 weeks trying to figure out if my son was smiling or just passing gas. Spoiler: mostly it was just gas. But the real smiles do come and they're the best thing ever.

That moment when they actually smile back at you on purpose is wild. We were all obsessed with catching those first real smiles at that age. Before that it's a lot of guess work but when they genuinely start smiling at YOU it's different. You'll know.
