When do they become actual humans and not just eat-sleep-poop machines?

I know this is kind of a dumb question lol but seriously asking. My son is 2 months old and I love him to death but I can't really interact with him yet? Like he doesn't do anything. I read to him, I talk to him, and he just stares or cries. My wife says I should just enjoy this phase but I'm kinda waiting for the moment where he actually does something.

What age did you guys start to feel like your kid had a personality and you could like, actually play together?

Wait until he laughs for the first time. That's when everything changes. You go from 'is this kid okay' to 'I would literally do anything for him.' Should be coming up soon for you.

Around 3 to 4 months they start tracking things with their eyes and smiling on purpose. That's when you realize there's a real person in there. Gets better every week after that.

Not a dumb question at all. Most people don't talk about this but somewhere around month 3 or 4 you'll suddenly have this moment where he responds to you and it hits different. You'll see his personality starting to come through.

Honestly the newborn phase is designed to not be fun. Two months in and you're just trying to survive. Give it another month and they start becoming interactive in a way that makes all the sleep deprivation feel worth it.

The eat sleep poop phase is temporary but feels eternal. Two months is still so new. You're doing great.
