When do you actually feel like you know what you're doing

We're at 3 months and I still feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. Is my baby crying because he's hungry, tired, gassy, or just because he's a baby? I can't interpret his cries. My wife seems to have some sixth sense but I just feel lost. We take him out and he cries and I panic. Other dads make it look easy. When does the confidence kick in or am I just supposed to fake it till I make it?
