Wife's postpartum recovery has been harder than expected

My wife is 2 months postpartum and she's still struggling. Not just physically but emotionally too. Some days she's fine and other days she's really down. I'm trying to be supportive and do everything I can but I also don't really know what I'm doing. Has anyone else had a partner go through this? What actually helps?
