Anyone else do hiking with littles?

Trying to figure out how to make hiking work with a 4 and 6yo. We did a mile yesterday and the 4yo made it about half way before we had to turn back. I'm thinking about getting a backpack carrier but wondering if that defeats the purpose. Want them to love nature like I do but also being realistic about their legs. What distances do your younger kids actually handle without complaints?

Half a mile at 4 years old is solid progress though. We've learned it's less about distance and more about the adventure for them at that age.

My kids are always up for a quick adventure. The trick is making it fun rather than a workout, even if you don't hit your original distance goal.
