Anyone else doing the camping trip with young kids this spring?

Planning to take my 4 and 6 year old camping for the first time ever in a few weeks. Renting a cabin near this state park instead of tent camping because I'm not trying to deal with that nightmare yet lol. Any advice on keeping them entertained without screens? I'm thinking hiking, fishing, maybe a scavenger hunt situation. Also what's the deal with ticks this time of year, do I need to worry?

Just did this last month actually. Make sure there's a good bathroom situation at the cabin because potty training and remote locations don't always mix well. And don't overplan. The kids will be entertained by way less than you think.

Do the cabin thing. Tenting with young kids is rough. You'll actually be able to enjoy it if they're not miserable and uncomfortable all night.

We did a cabin trip with similar ages last year. Protip: bring a ton of activities for the cabin in case the weather turns. Card games, coloring books, maybe a portable projector for movie night. Also plan your meals ahead because you don't want to be figuring out food when you've got two tired kids.

A few weeks should give you time to prep them mentally too. My kids did way better once I hyped it up and we talked about what to expect. Make it fun during the planning phase and they'll be excited.

A cabin for the first camping trip is the way to go. Way less stressful than tent camping with that age group. The 4 year old might get scared in a tent anyway. Make sure you do some day hikes or easy activities so they actually enjoy being outside, not just sitting in a cabin all weekend.

This is going to be amazing. The memories you make on that first trip will be worth all the planning headaches. My kids still talk about our first family camping trip two years later.

Cabin camping is the way to go for young kids on a first trip. You get the outdoor experience but you're not dealing with the nightmare of sleeping bags and tents with a 4 and 6 year old. Smart choice.
