My daughter won't stop asking for the National Geographic crystal growing kit. She's 8 and into rocks/geology stuff which is cool, but these kits seem pricey and I can't tell if they're actually good or just marketing. Worth it or should I just make her do some backyard digging experiments instead?
If she's serious about it, the NG kit is worth it. But make sure YOU are ready to help because kids lose interest fast if it doesn't work quickly. Set expectations upfront about timing and outcomes or it'll just be frustration.

lol these kits prey on kids with specific interests. Your daughter would probably get more out of a trip to a local museum gift shop or a geology field kit that lets her actually hunt rocks. The crystal kit is pretty and Instagram-worthy but not super educational.

They can be hit or miss. Have you checked YouTube? A lot of these kits have videos showing results - helps you know if it'll actually work or disappoint her
Get the kit if you're willing to supervise it. My son did one and I had to walk him through it multiple times. If she's independent and patient with waiting for results, perfect gift. If she needs instant gratification and constant input from you, might be frustrating.

They're decent but pricey for what they are. Honestly if she's genuinely into rocks/geology you might get better bang for buck with a rock tumbler (~$40-50) and some rough stones from an online supplier. Way more actual science than the kit.
