Best budget-friendly camping spots in the midwest?

Looking for good state parks or national forests in Wisconsin/Minnesota area for car camping with 3 kids (ages 4-10). Preferably places with decent hiking nearby and not too crowded. We usually go in July/August. Any recommendations? Tried Wisconsin Dells area last year and it was packed.

Interstate State Park in Wisconsin right on the St. Croix River is perfect for families and super budget friendly. The kids can swim and explore the rocks.

How old are your kids? That makes a difference on which spots work best. Some have better facilities for younger ones.

Minnesota DNR has tons of state parks that are practically free compared to the tourist traps. Try checking their website directly.

Starved Rock in Illinois is about 2.5 hours from Wisconsin border and absolutely incredible. Canyons, waterfalls, super affordable camping. Kids love the hiking trails.

Check out the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Wisconsin. We camp there all the time and it's gorgeous. Sites are like 25 bucks a night.
