Best camping spots near [region] for families?

Looking to plan a camping trip for next month with the wife and two kids (5 and 8). We want something not too remote but also not overcrowded. We've done state parks before and they're good but I'm curious if anyone has hidden gem recommendations. Budget isn't a huge issue but we're not looking for anything fancy. Would prefer somewhere with a creek or lake nearby since the kids love water. Any suggestions welcome!

We did a trip similar to what you're planning last summer with our three and honestly the key was picking somewhere with bathrooms and water hookups. Sounds fancy but trust me, makes the whole thing way less stressful when someone inevitably needs something at 2am.

Denver area has some solid options that hit that sweet spot. Rocky Mountain National Park area or maybe the state parks closer in - not too far from civilization but way fewer crowds than the tourist traps. With a 5 and 8 year old you'll want decent amenities nearby just in case.
