Looking to get the family out this weekend for some hiking. We've got kids 4 and 7 so nothing too crazy, maybe 3-4 miles max. We're within an hour of the city. Anyone have go-to spots that aren't totally packed? Last time we went to the popular trail and it was mobbed with people. Would love somewhere quieter where the kids can actually enjoy it instead of dodging other hikers the whole time.
Love this idea. Kids 4 and 7 are perfect ages for hiking. How much time do you have? That'll determine which trails make sense. Around here we stick to stuff under 5 miles or the four year old gets pretty grumpy.
The key is picking something with a good payoff at the end. Like a waterfall or a viewpoint. Kids that age need a destination or they'll ask how much further every 30 seconds. Bring way more snacks than you think you need.
Go early to beat crowds and pack it out. Nothing kills a family hike faster than being on a crowded trail with tired kids.
Those age ranges are perfect for hiking! We've had great luck with trails around the area, and honestly my kids get so excited knowing we're hitting the trail it makes the whole thing easier.
Three to four miles is totally doable with that crew. My oldest was right around that age when we started doing regular hikes, and it's become our favorite weekend thing now.
Look for trails with water features if you can. My kids got way more excited about a stream crossing than the actual scenic overlook. Even a small creek makes it an adventure.
Make sure you bring way more snacks than you think you'll need. The 4 year old will hit a wall fast but snacks fix everything. Also lots of water.

Check out the trails around Forest Park if you're still in the Portland area. We did that loop with my kids when they were around that age and it was perfect. Not too long, lots of stuff to look at.
