Building a raised garden bed this weekend, need advice

Finally have a free Saturday and the wife wants a vegetable garden. I'm planning to build a 4x8 raised bed using cedar boards. Never done this before but seems straightforward. Anyone here built one? Should I use hardware cloth for the bottom to keep out gophers or is that overkill? Also what's the best way to lay out the soil and compost ratio?

This is the kind of weekend mission I can get behind. Make it a family thing while you're at it. Kids love helping plant stuff even if they're more hindrance than help.

Nice project. Pro tip: get your soil delivered or buy bags ahead of time. Nobody warns you how much soil you actually need for one of these and it's a pain to figure out day-of. Also level that ground before you build or it'll drive you nuts.

4x8 is a solid size. Don't cheap out on the wood if you can help it. Pressure treated lasts way longer and your wife won't be frustrated when it falls apart in a year. Also make sure your soil mix is good or the whole thing gets weedy real fast.
