Building a treehouse with my 7yo and I'm already in over my head

So I promised my son we'd build a treehouse this summer and now I'm standing in my backyard looking at 2x8s and hardware store receipts trying to figure out which branch won't kill us. I've watched like 5 YouTube videos and I'm pretty sure I need to invest in a level and possibly some rope. Anyone else started a project way more ambitious than their skill level? Looking for real advice on safety because my wife is already giving me the look.

Man, I've been there with my kids on stuff like this. Start small, maybe just a platform in the tree first before you get fancy. Nothing wrong with taking it one weekend at a time instead of trying to finish it all at once.

Four kids here and I've learned that half the fun is the mess ups along the way. Your 7yo doesn't care if it's perfect, he just wants to be building it with his dad. You got this.

Those hardware store receipts are brutal but your son is going to remember this forever. My advice: grab some buddies to help, make it a Saturday morning thing with coffee, and lower your expectations a bit on the first version.
