This weekend we're tackling our backyard. Got plans for three 4x8 raised beds, gonna let the kids help with construction and plant some veggies. My 6yo is pumped, wants to grow carrots. Probably gonna take twice as long with them helping but that's kind of the whole point right? Anyone have tips for keeping kids engaged during longer projects?
Three 4x8s is no joke though. How long are you giving yourself for the actual build? I've found that having kids 'help' usually adds 2-3 hours to any project but yeah, totally worth it for what they learn.
That's awesome man. Getting your 6 year old involved in construction and gardening is the kind of memory they don't forget. We're trying to do more hands on stuff like this.
Getting your kids involved in building something they'll eat from is huge. My boys loved helping with little league projects, and they remember it forever.

This is awesome. My boys are 7 and 9 and we did something similar last spring. Pro tip: let them pick what to plant even if it seems random. My older one insisted on growing sunflowers that were way too tall but he checked on them every single day. Best decision we made.
Just finished something similar with my oldest and it was honestly therapeutic for both of us. We talked more during that project than we had in weeks. Something about working on something together outside just hits different.

Love this approach. We're doing a smaller version with our two in Boulder and honestly the kids care way more about the process than the actual vegetables. Getting them to dig in the dirt and feel invested in something growing is worth way more than whatever ends up actually harvesting.
