We did this last month with some cedar boards from Home Depot and honestly I was expecting it to fall apart by now. Kid helped measure (badly lol) and hammer nails. It's a little crooked but we've got tomatoes and peppers actually growing in there. She checks on it every single day. Might actually do another one this year.
This is the kind of small win that matters way more than people realize. Your kid's gonna remember building that with you way more than the bed itself.
Home Depot cedar is solid. How deep did you go? I've seen people do 12 inches and have zero drainage issues.
Cedar is the way to go. Did you treat it or seal it at all? Asking because I'm about to build one and want mine to last more than a season like my first attempt lol.
Did you add a bottom? We didn't and gophers absolutely wrecked our garden bed. Beautiful raised bed though if you avoided that particular nightmare.

That's awesome man, props for building it WITH your kid instead of just doing it yourself. The fact that it's still standing is legit impressive for cedar and six year old construction help.
