Camping trip disaster but also somehow perfect

Took the family camping for the first time last weekend. Tent leaked, burned the hot dogs, forgot half the gear at home. 6 year old got scared at night and slept between me and the wife, 4 year old woke up at 5am ready to explore. We were exhausted and soaking wet Sunday morning. But you know what? Driving home the kids were talking about when we could go again. Sometimes the messy chaotic stuff makes the best memories. Planning our next trip for next month.

Those are the trips that become family legends. My coworker always talks about their camping disaster from years ago and the kids still laugh about it. Sounds like you gave them something they'll remember forever.

We're planning our first camping trip with our 6 month old and this is exactly what I'm terrified of. Did you end up cutting it short or did you push through? Also how are the kids after a rough experience like that?

Camping disasters are the best stories though. The burnt hot dogs, the leaky tent, forgetting stuff - that's what makes it perfect. Your kids are going to remember this trip way more than if everything went smoothly.

The fact that you went for it anyway is what counts. First time camping with kids is chaotic no matter what. You faced the elements and came out with a story. That's a win.

Burned hot dogs, tent leak, forgot stuff... and it was still perfect. That right there is what parenting is. The best memories are usually the disasters. Glad you stuck it out instead of packing it in.
