Took the family camping and forgot the tent rain fly. Woke up at 3am in a downpour soaked. Had to pack up everything wet and head to a hotel. Not my finest moment as a dad. But you know what, the kids thought it was an adventure. We're going again next month and I've already checked the gear three times. Sometimes the failed missions teach you more than the successful ones.
The rain fly is not optional, learned that one the hard way too. At least you got a good story out of it right?
Ouch. Did you guys pack it in or did the kids want to bail? My two would have lost it being wet at 3am.
Oh man, this happened to us at a family reunion in Oregon last year. We learned the hard way that a rain fly isn't optional, it's essential. Did you at least salvage some of the camping trip or was it a complete wash?
Oh man, that's rough. We had something similar happen but we got lucky and it stayed mostly dry. The middle of the night scramble to save the trip is real.
Dude that's rough. My 8 month old would have been screaming the whole time and honestly I probably would have just sat there in the wet dark wondering what I was doing. Props for getting through it though.

This is exactly why I check my gear three times before we leave. Lesson learned the expensive way I guess. At least you have a story to tell now.
