Taking the boys camping for the first time next month. They're 4 and 7. I've got the tent and sleeping bags but I'm worried about keeping them entertained and making sure they don't lose it when they get bored. Anyone done this with young kids? What games or activities actually work? Also how do I keep them from eating dirt and running off into the woods lol. Any gear I'm forgetting?
Bring glow sticks for the kids at night. Sounds simple but it keeps them entertained and lets them have fun without needing screens. Trust me on this one.
Test everything out in your backyard first if you can. Set up the tent, check your sleeping setup, make sure you actually know how everything works. Nothing worse than figuring it out in the dark with tired kids.
That's awesome you're getting them out there. Pro tip: bring way more snacks than you think you need. Kids get bored fast and hungry snacks fix both problems. Also pack the sleeping bags extra cozy so they actually want to sleep.
My kid climbs everything so camping is either a total disaster or the best day ever depending on his mood. What area are you heading to? And definitely pack entertainment for the tent at night.

Four and seven is a great age for camping. Make sure you've got some activities planned for around the campfire - marshmallows obviously but also maybe some glow sticks or something. The 4 year old might get scared at night so keep a light on in the tent.

The boys are going to love it. I'd say invest in some good sleeping pads because the ground gets uncomfortable fast, and bring a camping stove so you can make real food instead of just hot dogs.
