Camping trip with the kids next month

Taking the boys camping for the first time. Youngest is 4, oldest is 8. I've got a 4 person tent and a Coleman stove, planning to do some easy hiking and cook hot dogs over a fire. Should I go car camping or actually backpack? Thinking car camping might be smart for the first time but want it to feel real enough to actually be fun. What am I forgetting?
