Considering a camping trip with 3yo and 5yo - realistic expectations?

My wife thinks I'm insane but I want to try taking the kids camping for the first time. We have family land in Mendocino with a spot we could set up. I'm not trying to do a backcountry thing - just a tent in one spot, probably one night to start. But I'm genuinely wondering if this is just going to be a nightmare. Has anyone done this with kids this age? What do I need to know? We have a decent tent and sleeping bags already.
