DIY deck repair turned into a full teardown

Started the weekend planning to just replace some rotted boards on our back deck. Pulled up the first plank and realized the joists underneath were shot. Now I'm looking at basically rebuilding the whole thing. Not thrilled about spending another 2-3 weekends on this but my wife says it's better to do it right now than have the thing collapse in the summer. Anyone dealt with this?

This is always how it goes. You think it's a quick fix and suddenly you're looking at a complete rebuild. Did you end up having to replace the whole thing or just the structural stuff?

This is why I don't start home projects lightly. One weekend project can turn into three. At least you're getting it done right though instead of just patching it up.

Deck projects are the worst for scope creep. You pull up one board and realize the whole thing is compromised. How much are you in at this point?
