Thinking about building a small quarter pipe in the driveway for my 12yo. He's starting to get into skateboarding but lessons are expensive and the local skate park is kind of intimidating for him. Anyone built one? How much space and materials are we talking? Rough budget? And realistically how much will he actually use it before moving on to the next thing?
Before you start make sure you have room. A quarter pipe needs decent setback from your property line and neighbors. Check local codes because some places have restrictions on structure height.
If he's just starting out you might want to build something smaller first. A 3 foot quarter pipe is easier to learn on than a full sized one and uses way less material.
A quarter pipe is legit. My 14yo has been asking for one for two years and I finally built a small one this summer. He uses it way more than I expected.
YouTube is your friend here. Search for DIY quarter pipes and follow one of the detailed builds. Don't just wing it because balance and angle matter a lot for safety.
The real question is whether your kid is actually going to use it or if it becomes a storage spot for lawn equipment. Be honest with yourself before you spend the time and money.

Budget more than you think you will. Lumber prices are insane right now and you'll probably go through more supplies than your initial plan. Plan for like 400 to 600 bucks for a decent small one.
