Taking the family camping for the first time next month and I'm nervous as hell. Kids are 4 and 8, wife has never camped before. I'm planning a spot about 90 mins from home with easy trails. What am I forgetting? I've got a tent, sleeping bags, camp stove, coolers. Should I bring a generator? Also how do I keep the kids entertained at night without screens?
Being nervous is totally normal. Start with a practice night in the backyard if you haven't already. Gets the kids used to the tent without the full camping commitment. Also bring way more food than you think you need.
Start small with that first trip, honestly. My advice is pick a campground close to home so you're not stressed about being hours away if something goes sideways.
Make sure your wife knows what to expect ahead of time so there are no surprises about bathroom situations or sleeping arrangements. Way less stress that way.
Camping is so good for families. Just accept that things will go sideways and roll with it. Some of my best dad memories came from camping disasters that seemed terrible at the time.
Your 8 year old will probably love it. The 4 year old might get freaked out by the dark or bugs. Headlamps for both kids are a game changer because they feel like they have control. Trust me on this.
