First time building a deck, any tips before I start?

Looking at doing a 12x16 deck off the back of the house. Got the lumber delivered Thursday and I'm planning to start digging post holes this Saturday. I've watched a bunch of videos and read the guides but this is my first real project like this. Just looking for any experienced guys who've done this to maybe tell me what I should know before I mess it up. Not hiring a contractor, trying to save the money and learn something.

Nice. YouTube is your friend here. Watch a few videos on your specific design before you start. And get a helper if you can, makes the whole thing way easier.

12x16 is solid size. Make sure your posts are set right and check your level constantly. I learned that lesson the hard way my first time.

Post holes on Saturday sounds like a good call to get ahead. Just grab some help if you can because digging is brutal work, and you'll need the energy for the actual building part.

Nice, 12x16 is a solid size project. Make sure those post holes go deep enough, at least 30 inches, and set them in concrete. That foundation is everything or you'll regret it in a couple years.

That's awesome but real talk, renting the tools saves you money and frustration. Post holes are no joke and a power drill makes everything faster.
