Found the perfect rainy day project

This week it rained basically the entire time and instead of screen time I busted out this cardboard box fort idea. Basically you just tape a bunch of boxes together and let the kids decorate/paint it however they want. Our 7yo and 9yo spent like 4 hours on it.

Came out looking like a castle. Lasted like 2 days before they destroyed it but totally worth it. We're saving boxes now for next rainy week lol.

the cardboard box fort is such a vibe. My kids did this and then wanted to keep it up for like 3 weeks. Eventually it started falling apart but they were already over it by then

Did you find boxes from somewhere specific or just hit up a grocery store? And how long did it actually take to build vs decorate? Just trying to gauge if this is a 1-hour project or an all-day thing.

This is such a solid idea. Cardboard is free/cheap and kids go absolutely feral for building their own fort. We did this last month and my 6yo spent like 3 hours on it. The decorating part kept him busy longer than I expected.

We did something similar but made it a whole neighborhood thing and invited some other kids over. Turned into this massive fort that took up like half the garage. Mess was insane but they had the best time

the painting part is key because that's when they actually own it. My 5yo spent like an hour decorating his section and was so proud. Way better than just handing them a finished fort

Did you use regular tape or duct tape? Asking because I tried this once and regular tape basically fell apart in like a day

This is gold for rainy days. We usually default to movies and I know that's lazy but having an alternative that's actually engaging is what I needed. Gonna steal this idea for next week.

How many boxes are we talking? And did you let them design it first or just let them wing it? Asking because I want to try this but also don't want to end up with a ton of tape and marker all over everything.

The tape is key - clear packing tape works way better than duct tape for this. My kids went through like half a roll but the structural integrity was actually decent.
