Hiking trip - almost lost my kid on the trail

Took the boys on a 5 mile hike at the state park. Everything was going great until my youngest decided to wander off the marked path looking for rocks or whatever. Lost sight of him for maybe 30 seconds, most terrifying 30 seconds of my life. Found him 50 feet back picking up pebbles. Now I'm that dad with a harness and a whistle. Lesson learned.

Oh man, the rock hunting detour. My toddler does that at the park and I'm always torn between letting him explore and having a mild heart attack. Glad you found him safe.

5 miles is solid with two kids. That wandering instinct is real though - I've got two athletes and they still try to take random detours. Keep those eyes sharp out there.

Kids and rocks, man. At least he's curious and not scared of adventure. Just maybe practice a loud whistle for next time.
