Hiking with kids is harder than it looks

Thought a 3 mile trail would be no problem. My 6yo made it about 1.5 miles before he started complaining his legs were tired and wanted to be carried. I ended up doing the second half with him on my shoulders while his older brother actually finished the trail. Good exercise I guess but not exactly the family bonding moment I was going for. Tips for getting younger kids into hiking?

Ha, I learned real quick that kids have way different pace expectations than adults. Three miles with a six year old carrying capacity is rough. You might want to pick shorter trails next time.
