LEGO robotics kit - worth the investment?

My 10yo is super into building and tech stuff. We got him a basic LEGO set for his birthday but now he's interested in the robotics kits. They're expensive ($350+) and I'm not sure if he'll stick with it or if it's just a phase. Anyone have experience with these? Do kids actually use them long-term or does the novelty wear off fast?
