We're thinking of taking the kids (5, 9, 12) camping for a long weekend in July. Trying to avoid the super crowded places but also don't want to be too remote with young kids. Has anyone had good experiences with Echo Lake or the Rampart Range area? Looking for something with decent bathrooms and not TOO far from civilization if things go south.
Eleven Mile State Park is perfect for that age range and way less crowded than Rocky Mountain National Park. 90 mins from Denver, good trails for the 12yo, easy stuff for the 5yo
July is brutal timing for Colorado camping if you're avoiding crowds - that's peak season. But the upside is the weather is reliable. Bring rain gear anyway though
With a 5yo definitely make sure wherever you go has water nearby and isn't too remote. You don't want to be 6 miles from the car when she needs to pee
Avoid Woodland Park area in July unless you wanna fight for campsites. Try heading toward the Rampart Range instead - less touristy.
Mueller State Park near Divide is underrated and perfect for families. Water access, easy hikes, way less crowded than you'd think. About 2.5 hours depending where in Denver you are
Just did Gross Reservoir last month with a 5, 8, and 11. Honestly it hit different - easy access, not mobbed, and far enough out that it feels 'remote' without being sketchy. Fair warning: the drive is kinda boring for kids but worth it.
Responded to Echo Lake comment - can you actually swim at Echo or just wade? Asking because our 5yo isn't a strong swimmer yet and I'm paranoid.
Echo Lake is perfect for that crew size and age range. Moderate hike in keeps crowds down, there's a beach area the kids can actually swim in, and it's like 1.5 hours from Denver. We did it with similar ages and the 5yo didn't complain once.
Stay away from Estes Park area in July - absolutely slammed. Look at the San Juan area or even up toward Granby. More remote but still accessible with kids

How experienced are your kids with camping? That matters for which spots you pick. If it's first time I'd go somewhere with bathrooms nearby so bedtime doesn't become a nightmare.
